The BTSF meeting from 22-24 November in Rome was a great success, as Silvia D’Albenzio and the rest of the BTSF team managed to organize training for three parallel sessions, including pig welfare, poultry welfare, and slaughter.

Three representatives from EURCAW-Pigs attended the event. Both Herman Vermeer and Lene Juul Pedersen were presenting their research and assisting in the running of the event, whilst Eimear McLoughlin was there to build on her previous research with animal welfare inspectors in the EU.

Herman presented his work on heat stress in pigs and a general overview of EURCAW-Pigs. Lene presented her research on farrowing housing and management. All these topics are hot items in the daily work of the inspectors and led to fruitful discussions.

Eimear presented her previous work with inspectors to many delegates. She discussed the challenges of evaluating welfare on farm and at slaughter with many inspectors. She participated in group activities which facilitated a deeper insight into the various obstacles inspectors face in the work of regulating welfare. She was grateful to have met many inspectors who she will be in contact with in the future as she embarks on future research related to pig transport in 2024.

EURCAW-Pigs is grateful for the fruitful collaboration that we have with BTSF as we both share a common interest in supporting the needs of animal welfare inspectors across the EU.
