The Members of the European Parliament voted in favour of a motion for a resolution on the European Citizens Initiative (ECI) “End the Cage Age”. With the resolution the European Parliament asks the EU Commission to come up with legislative proposals to ban cages in animal farming by 2027.

Inspections to quantify sows’ welfare status in group-housing systems
Council Directive 2008/120/EC of 18 December 2008 laying down minimum standards for the protection of pigs states that pregnant sows must be housed in groups from four weeks after service until one week before the expected time of farrowing. Commission designates a second European Union Reference Centre
In October 2019, the Commission designated a second Reference Centre dedicated to the welfare of poultry and other small farmed animals. This centre aims at improving the enforcement of the EU legislation applicable to those animals, such as laying hens, chickens for meat production and other small farmed animals, including their transport and killing operation.
