Council Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 regulates legal requirements for pigs at the time of killing.

The requirements are structured around three key areas to focus on during welfare inspections. Moreover, basic legal requirements on procedures, responsibilities and competence are given:

  • Procedures, responsibilities and competence
  • Handling: moving into the stunner and restraint for the purpose of stunning
  • Stunning: electrical stunning and CO2 stunning
  • Bleeding (killing)

Listed below are requirements citing the literal text of the Regulation without being comprehensive. Moreover, there might be stricter national legislation in place. The review on pig welfare in slaughterhouses at stunning and bleeding describes the requirements in more detail.
